The 2022 Shawnee Marathon and Half-Marathon will be returning on October 2. 2022. This is a few weeks sooner than the Marathon typically lands on. This was done so that the race would fall in conjunction with the City of Harrisburg Sasquatch Festival. This allows the City to close all of the necessary streets on one weekend as opposed to two weekends in the same month. It also provides a festival-style atmosphere for our finishers.
Located in the heart of Southern Illinois and Garden of the Gods Country. The area’s landscape is one of the most scenic areas of the midwest. The race features sandstone rock formations, high vistas, rolling meadows, tall trees, acres of farmland, fresh air, and just a serene overall atmosphere.
Here is some helpful information and important notes to understand about this year’s race. Registration and Race Day - This race will be much small than year’s past - capped at 1000 participants across the 4 events. - There will be staggered starts every 10 - 15 minutes, until all participants have gone through the start line. - All participants will be required to wear face coverings when social distancing is not possible, this means start, finish, aid stations, and any area along the course where runners are closer than 6 feet from each other. - The post- race will be minimal to avoid crowding.
Join us for a scenic marathon, half marathon, and 5K run/walk in the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. All races start and finish in Empire, MI. The half marathon and 5k will follow the same course as the marathon, with the half marathon turning around at the 6.5 mile mark, and the 5k turning around at 1.5 miles. At the peak of fall color season, the tree-lined course will be one that both runners and spectators won’t soon forget. See why Good Morning America calls this area one of the most beautiful in the United States.

Marathon Course Notes:
“We have the third flattest course in the world, we’re going to get elite runners from all over the world every single year,” said Todd.
While things went off without a hitch today, the race itself has hit a few speed bumps before the starting gun.
“2019 the flood, canceled the race. 2020 obviously COVID, we couldn’t pull the race off. So now this year to actually have it and caliber of athletes and local athletes come out here and do this has been an amazing feeling,” said Todd.
The race drew quite the crowd, even runners competing in the Tokyo Olympics made their way through the closed course cheered on by the spectators and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The drought came in three waves, 1934, 1936, and 1939–1940, but some regions of the High Plains experienced drought conditions for as many as eight years.
