History of the Marathon & Ascent
The Pikes Peak Marathon, founded in 1956, is the oldest continually held marathon in the United States, taking runners from Manitou Springs, Colorado, to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet, and back down for a total of 26.2 grueling mountain miles. It and its sister race, the Pikes Peak Ascent, each climb about 7,800 vertical feet up the historic Barr Trail on the east face of the mountain. The Ascent, which climbs 13.3 miles to finish at the summit, used to be held on the same day as the Marathon but became its own event in the 1980s due to its popularity.
If you read the course description, it should be obvious that the course is not uniform in grade. And, even in some of the sections described, the grade will vary markedly. However, exceptions aside, the overall ascent

The comforts and friendliness of the small Idaho town of Ashton are just one of the unique features that have earned this town’s annual Mesa Falls Marathon & Half Marathon raves as one of the nation’s 50 great marathons by the authors of the book From Fairbanks to Boston, 50 Great U.S. Marathons.
Is the trail as tough as advertised? Yes and No. It’s no run down a nature trail (but at times it is just that!) Some big hills but no supplemental oxygen is needed. Our descriptions are a disclaimer. All in all, a great run in a beautiful environment…with stupid spots to make it memorable, but it is a run, not an obstacle mud run race.
Course: Mostly paved with a few small patches of gravel, four bridges (two covered).

The details of the eight races of the Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series are below. For the truly adventurous, please note that three of the races are labeled as “legs” of something called the Madison Trifecta. This means the completion of the Madison Duathlon (first leg), Madison Marathon (second leg), and the Madison Triathlon (third leg) all within a four week time span. This is called the Madison Trifecta. As of the end of 2015, there have been only 18 people who have completed the Madison Trifecta. They earned the coveted T.B.A. award which stands for Total Bad Ass. This is because anyone who can do the Madison Trifecta over four weeks of summer is a Total Bad Ass.

Dust Bowl Phenomenon
he Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the American and Canadian prairies during the 1930s; severe drought and a failure to apply dryland farming methods to prevent the aeolian processes caused the phenomenon. The drought came in three waves, 1934, 1936, and 1939–1940, but some regions of the High Plains experienced drought conditions for as many as eight years.

Experience the Big Easy first hand as you run through the French Quarter, along Esplanade Ave, Jackson Square, and City Park, all awhile running and next to the same floats seen at the world famous Mardi Gras festival.
All races will start together at 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time. There is a 6-hour cutoff for both races. However, all half marathoners must maintain a 15 minute per mile average. All full marathoners and relay runners must maintain a pace of 13:44 per mile or faster.
