May 22, 2022   Big anniversary edition of the VIVAWEST Marathon: After a two-year break, the largest running event in the Ruhr area celebrates its return and its tenth anniversary at the same time. Around 7,000 athletes wanted to explore the Ruhr area today. From 42.195 kilometres to the 6 kilometre Family & Friends Run, there was something for every level of running. Particularly popular is the half marathon with over 3,200 participants, which, like the VIVAWEST marathon, leads through Gelsenkirchen and Essen past the Zollverein World Heritage Site and through the Nordsternpark. The 15-kilometre run started in Bottrop and the WAZ 10-kilometre run and the Sparkassen Teamrun in Gladbeck.
The 10th VIVAWEST Marathon was overshadowed by the tragic death of a participant who suddenly collapsed shortly before the finish. Despite immediate rescue measures, which were initiated immediately and continued during the ambulance transport and in the hospital, the participant died.The entire marathon family – the team of organizer MMP, title partner VIVAWEST, all partners and participants – is deeply saddened that an athlete died today during the event. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones, to whom we express our deepest sympathy.
